Single-Phase Appliances

Single-phase appliances operate on a single-phase power supply, which involves the flow of electricity through one conductor and typically provides power at around 240 volts. Each single-phase appliance includes one active wire, one neutral wire, and, depending on the class, an earth connection.

There are two classes of single-phase appliances:

• Class 1 Appliances: These appliances have all conductive parts and components connected to an earth wire, creating a continuous circuit to the earth pin.

• Class 2 Appliances: These are double insulated and do not require an earth connection. They are designed with no exposed conductive parts and feature two layers of protection to ensure electrical safety.

All single-phase appliances must be tested in accordance with the AS/NZS 3760 standard to ensure they meet safety requirements.

Three-Phase Appliances

Three-phase appliances are designed to operate on a three-phase power supply, which consists of three live wires, one neutral wire, and an earth connection, supplying power at approximately 415 volts. This type of power is typically used for industrial appliances.

Unlike single-phase appliances, three-phase appliances do not have different classes. Instead, each appliance must have all conductive components connected to an earth wire to ensure safety.

All three-phase appliances must also be tested in accordance with the AS/NZS 3760 standard to maintain compliance and safety.
